Good morning, dear brothers and sisters in Christ. Welcome to your Midweek Mindset Shift: a space each Wednesday to pause, reflect, and realign. Whether it’s a short devotional, a moment of Lectio Divina, or a simple word of encouragement, my hope is that your heart finds stillness today. In the midst of the midweek rush, my prayer is that we choose a few sacred minutes to be with Jesus. He’s already waiting for you.
Scripture: Luke 10:38-42
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” — Luke 10:41-42
This week I wanted to focus on a classic: Martha & Mary. In this story, Martha is the one bustling around, preparing the meal, making the home beautiful, ensuring everything is just right for Jesus. It’s not that what she’s doing is wrong it’s good, even generous. But in her busyness, she misses something essential.
I definitely relate to Martha. I always feel like I have to be doing something as part of my devotion to Jesus.
Mary, on the other hand, is found at Jesus’ feet, listening, loving, and lingering. Not helping. Not hosting. Just being. In the ancient world, sitting at the feet of a rabbi was the posture of a disciple. Mary wasn’t being lazy. In fact, she was being bold. She was choosing intimacy with Christ over the expectations placed on her.
Jesus doesn’t scold Martha for working. He gently calls her to something deeper. He sees her anxious heart and reminds her what matters most: Him. Not what we can do for Him, not how we perform, not how we keep everything running, but just being with Him.
Let that really sink in. This one is so hard for me. I often think that when I open my home, or my heart, it’s doing everyone a disservice to everyone if it’s not “perfect.” But what a lie.
I often feel like my worth is tied to my productivity. What a lie. Or that what I have to offer is enough. What a lie. The truth is, Jesus only wants us to sit at His feet and listen.
How many times have we been Martha? Rushing through our days, checking off spiritual boxes, hosting people, managing our homes and our lives yet wondering why we feel so distant from God. But Jesus sees us. He calls us by name. And He gently invites us to choose the “better part”: to sit, to listen, to abide. That’s all He wants from us! Seriously.
Here’s a confession: sometime I choose dishes over prayer. And while I think that with the right heart posture, the dishes are my prayer and offering to God… sometimes I do so at the expense of intimacy with Him. Last night, I sat in my prayer chair, lights off, eyes closed and put on a podcast of someone saying the rosary, and let those precious words wash over me. No working, only resting in the rosary. Even though I didn’t even have my rosary in hand, and all I had to offer was a whisper, it was healing. It was restoring just to sit at Jesus’s feet, picture myself like Mary and receive His love.
Today, we are invited to pause. To quiet the noise. To draw near to the Lord, not in our striving, but in stillness. The work will always be there. The invitation to His feet? That’s the part that cannot be taken from us unless we never make the time for it…
Reflection Questions:
What am I anxious or worried about today and how is Jesus calling me to lay it all at His feet.
Am I spending more time doing for Jesus than being with Him?
How can I choose the “better part” in the middle of my responsibilities?
Challenge: Spend just 15 minutes today in silence, eyes closed, just laying it all at His feet.
Prayer for the week: Lord Jesus, You see me in my busyness. You know the weight I carry and the things I feel responsible for. Thank You for gently calling me to lay it down and to simply be with You. Teach me to choose what is better…not once, but again and again. Help me to rest in Your presence, to listen to Your Word, and to let You reorder my heart. Amen.
In Christ,
Lily

Beautiful. I find myself often like Martha, worried about this and that function, gathering, responsibility. This is a great reminder for taking the time to just sit in Jesus' presence. Blessings.
